The Secret ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort

by Lady Charlotte Lynham

As winter descended upon the Zillertal Valley, the air grew crisp and the landscape transformed into a picturesque snowy wonderland. I found myself at the ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort, where the charm of the mountains seamlessly blended with the comforts of luxury.

Family-run for five generations and brimming with Austrian charm, ZillergrundRock offers its guests Tyrolean hospitality that celebrates the best of local customs, wellness traditions and regional produce. Originally built in 1912 this luxury mountain resort began as a small-scale rural inn. Since then it has had six evolutions, with its most recent, and radical, renovation completed in 2022. Today ZillergrundRock is run by husband and wife team Christian & Melle Pfister.

Staying at ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort

My stay in a Spa Suite was nothing short of enchanting. The suite boasted a spacious design, with warm wooden accents that invited relaxation. Large windows framed breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks, creating an atmosphere that felt both serene and invigorating. The balcony with a hanging chair allowed for a connection between the comfort of the room and the landscape outside.

After settling in, I took a moment to explore the suite’s lavish amenities. The private infrared cabin promised a soothing escape, while the plush seating area was perfect for unwinding after a day of outdoor adventures. My favourite feature was the day bed in the “spa room”, off the corridor, adorned with lots of scatter cushions and a fleece throw, it was perfect for snuggling or chilling before a bath or after a session in the infrared cabin.

Food and Drink at ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort

As the evening approached, the anticipation of a gourmet dinner at the hotel’s restaurant filled the air. The culinary experience at ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort was designed to be as inviting as the surroundings. All stays are offered on a 3/4 board gourmet basis including breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and a Gourmet six-course dinner so I was eager to indulge.

Dinner commenced with a delightful selection of local specialities, each dish crafted to highlight the rich flavours of the region. The chef’s attention to detail was evident in every bite, starting from the warm, freshly baked bread served with artisanal spreads.

I savoured each course, from the hearty mountain venison to the delicate fish, accompanied by an impressive array of wines from Christian Pfister’s cellar. The ambience was cosy, with soft lighting enhancing the dining experience. Adam and I also got to experience one night of dining at Restaurant Rocky 7, which has been awarded three toques by the prestigious Gault & Millau guide.

This evening comprised seven prepared tasting courses, all meticulously presented with unique flavour profiles, creating a sense of culinary flair and making for a very memorable evening at ZillergrundRock. I relished the opportunity to enjoy a meal that felt both traditional and innovative, expertly prepared with seasonal ingredients.

ZillergrundRock Breakfast

As night fell, I returned to my suite. The plush bed promised a restful night, and I drifted off to sleep dreaming of mastering the slopes of the Zillertal the next day. Morning arrived, bringing with it the promise of a hearty breakfast. The breakfast spread was a feast for the senses, showcasing local cheeses, fresh pastries, and a variety of fruits. I indulged in some of the homemade jams, each jar bursting with flavour, offering a taste of the region’s bounty washed down with a much-needed coffee ready to tackle the slopes of the region.

Wellness at ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort

Post-ski, I decided to take advantage of the hotel’s Sky Spa. The ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort is home to two spa areas spanning 3,500m2. Facilities include a new Event Sauna designed to take advantage of the best views, saunas and steam baths, treatment rooms, a rooftop gym, relaxation areas, an indoor pool and an outdoor Kneipp Path. There is also a weekly activity programme with everything from yoga and meditation to guided winter hikes.

The wellness area was a paradise of tranquillity, featuring 360˚ views of the Zillertal Alps. I started with a refreshing swim in the infinity pool, its warm waters contrasting beautifully with the chill in the air. Floating amidst the mountains, I felt a deep sense of peace wash over me. After swimming, I explored the various saunas and steam rooms, each promising relaxation and rejuvenation.

We also got to experience a massage whilst staying at ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort in the wellness area, which takes place in a rather funky room that has W Hotels vibes. We both had the Classic Massage, a treatment to relax tired muscles and improve blood circulation. This massage also helps to reduce stress and promote your well-being. After many days on the slopes, this was very much welcome.

The highlight of the spa experience was undoubtedly the rooftop event sauna. As I relaxed in the space looking out to the mountains beyond I felt a real connection to nature. Most of the time I am in the Alps the mountains are a place of sport and high-intensity output, but here in the cocoon of the Sky Spa, they became the background for pure relaxation. A rather wonderful juxtaposition that allowed me to take in the majesty of these natural wonders.

Close to but not directly in Mayrhoften means you get the best of both worlds, close to the slopes but far enough away to feel like you are in your own private hideaway. Plus, with its picturesque surroundings, elegant minimal architecture, modern wellness facilities and authentic Tyrolean hospitality, ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort offers the quintessential alpine getaway.
