Wellbeing from the inside out

by Lorna Oakley

How much has this third lockdown felt different to the first or even the second? Maybe it’s the dark nights and colder mornings, I know I feel a bit different this time in terms of my wellbeing.

There has been some positives though, there’s been those breakthrough independents that have been shared via word of mouth and we fell in love and there’s that little bit of self love that maybe we didn’t feature in the bigger scale of things until we were faced with more time than previously.

Some of us have dipped into our inner thoughts and took a more spiritual approach, or at least become more aware of what we are ingesting, from our skincare to the health of our hair; most importantly it’s our wellbeing as a whole, creating a set of rituals that creates calm in chaos.

On that note, as we step out of the winter solstice and look forward to brighter days, I was rather lucky to put this theory to the test via Susie Mermaid, Funderm, and Universal Soul Company.

For over a decade, holistic facialist and body worker Susie Mermaid has travelled internationally, working with private and celebrity clientele on land, at sea and hosting luxury wellbeing retreats in the Balearic Islands. Guests have often commented on Susie’s intuition, her calming therapeutic touch has been known to leave mermaids and mermen feeling ‘suspended in time’ and ‘floating on air’ for hours afterwards, as you may have seen by my previous posts and social media, my obsession with the sea is real; this in itself is caught my attention.

So let’s start with a hot bath after a chilly beach walk . . . Detoxifying spirulina blends with mood boosting rosemary and thyme. Nourishing safflower infuses skin with minerals, nutrients and essential fatty acids for a therapeutic bath time retreat. The only way in my opinion is to run the bath with Marine Bath Oil close the door and create a cloud of the most delicious steam before soaking long enough for the beautiful oils to do their stuff, I can only describe it as the smell and feeling of a being in a wonderful spa when I closed my eyes. Team this with the Body Butter, can we just talk texture here? You know when it feels like it’s just all natural? no residue and it just sinks in… I am SUCH a fan.

Stepping out of the bathroom (rhetorically and in real time) and I’ve fallen for the uplifting scent of the Universal Soul Company, started life in my sitting room and it moved to my office, teaming with the soul mist at the end of the day as I switch my laptop off at the end of the day.

The Universal Soul Company is more than a business or lifestyle brand. It’s a call to people, at a time when technology and social media dominate our lives, to value our senses, and have the courage to share this unique experience of being human.” I for one could not agree more what with being a “work from home” entrepreneur it can sometimes be tough to turn off but these home fragrances has really helped.

As well as our wellbeing from a mental and external point of view, there’s been a focus on supplements that assist skincare. I was kindly sent a package from Funderm that contained cleanser and toner, but more intriguing were the gummies that were sent.

Funderm’s Chief Biologist, Dr. Miya Sharfman explains why using supplements in skincare isn’t a fad and is just as beneficial for keeping skin vital as it is for your gut. “Our skin is home to trillions of microorganisms, both good and bad, which form a layer over your skin called “Microflora” and “Microbiota”. In healthy skin the microbiota is balanced and microorganisms are largely beneficial in protecting our skin against harmful microbes. However, in inflammation-associated skin disorders such as acne and rosacea we can see disruption to the microbiota composition”.

Treating your skin from the inside will boost and enhance the effects of your skincare routine thanks to potent ingredients that are absorbed easily and treat the nutritional needs your skin “feeds” on to stay healthy. Obviously we all know that a healthy diet is the key here, but it’s also good to have a helping hand. Especially, as right now it’s a bit grey and dark outside, we are more susceptible to feeling a little flat or doing less exercise as we usually would.

Even if it’s a little step in the right selfcare direction it’s a start.
