Trump Turnberry, A Luxury Collection Resort

It is a beautiful drive up to towards the Trump Turnberry hotel set along the rugged Ayrshire coast which sets the scene for the stunning views that are visible from the hotel. The hotel is nestled at the top of a hill overlooking the sea and beach front below. As you pull up at the main reception area you are greeted by a picturesque central fountain which completes the impressive and grand looking entrance.

Built in 1906 and steeped in history the Trump Turnberry has been an iconic landmark in the area for over one hundred years. So much more than just a hotel, the resort includes a selection of rooms, suites, villas and self-catering apartments. Famous for their championship golf course and encompassing a modern and luxurious spa, the Trump Turnberry has so much to offer and something to suit all travellers.

The clever architectural design with floor to ceiling windows allows guests to capture not only the stunning views but also magical the sunrises and sunsets. Furnishings are refined and luxurious but the hotel still manages to remain comfortable and relaxed. A haven for golfers with relaxing coastal views and a challenging world renowned course, the Ailsa course and recently renovated King Robert the Bruce are at the top of many golfers bucket lists but also not intimidating for anyone who just wants to try their hand! For those who wish to indulge in other outdoor pursuits there are plenty of options to choose from. These include archery, air rifle shooting, mini highland games and quad biking. My favourite activity that is available would have to be horse riding, as it is such a wonderful and rare opportunity to gallop along a pretty beach, or you can take things at a much slower pace if you are a beginner.

During my visit I stayed in one of the two bed self-catering cottage suites located in close proximity to the hotel at the foot of the hill which almost has a mini village feel. The classically designed cottages have a very stripped back and modern feel with a spacious open plan kitchen and lounge diner. The two bedrooms are also roomy and all cottages are equipped with state of the art technology, an impressively sized flat screen TV, kitchenware and a selection of games making them a great choice for families and friends staying together.

With so much splendour it is also not surprising that Trump Turnberry is a sort after location for weddings and other events. The Trump Ballroom with its elegant interior and huge sparkling crystal chandeliers is the perfect backdrop for any party or big celebration.

If you are looking to feel relaxed and rejuvenated during your visit I would recommend taking advantage of the fantastic facilities and range of face and body treatments available at The Spa at Turnberry. The swimming pool and wet room facilities are really well designed and take you away to an indoor oasis of calm. For those like me who enjoy keeping fit on their travels check out the gym with state of the art equipment including a rowing machine powered by water technology!

For the foodies out there you are in luck, as Trump Turnberry has a selection of gorgeous restaurants you can choose from. I dined in the signature 1906 restaurant named after the opening year of the hotel. The panoramic reviews from this dining room are wonderful to enjoy as the sun begins to go down and you can fully appreciate the changing colours of the sky. Not only is the food to die for, the staff at Turnberry are absolutely superb.

The staff members that looked after me during their stay truly loved their jobs and never tired of the amazing views. Being served by such proficient, friendly and passionate team made for a great atmosphere at all times.

A highlight of my visit had to be indulging in afternoon tea in the The Grand Tea Lounge & Bar. I am quite the connoisseur when it comes to afternoon tea and of all those I have tried on my travels over the years, Turnberry’s offering has to rate as my favourite of all time! Firstly the selection of fruit and herbal teas is not only extensive but delicious. I recommend a Malibu style tea with peach and coconut. The sandwich selection is varied and plentiful but the star of the show has to be the mini cakes. Too many delicious and perfectly presented treats to mention, but let’s just say I greedily devoured my way through all of them! For those who are more partial to a tipple than a sweet treat, the bar serves an extensive range of wines, spirits and cocktails. If whisky is your thing you are in luck as you have over 250 to choose from.

Another dining option is The Duel In The Sun located near to the renovated clubhouse. Named after the famous 1977 open battle between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. This restaurant features a steak, lobster concept cooked from a Josper grill. This halfway house provides a lively and intimate setting for those enjoying golf to stop for a bite to eat.

If you prefer a fine dining option you must visit the Chef’s Table that is situated in the main kitchen. This private dining experience offers a special opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal whilst watching the Trump Turnberry chef from the best seat in the house. Not something I personally experienced but it sounds fabulous.

Overall I genuinely could not find fault with The Trump Turnberry, I really felt that every step of the way my mini break experience was outstanding, especially the service from staff and the afternoon tea offering. Trump Turnberry really is a Scottish gem.
