Staying at THE OMNIA with spectacular views of the Matterhorn

by Lady Charlotte Lynham

THE OMNIA in Zermatt is not just a luxury hotel; it’s a winter paradise that offers an unforgettable escape into the snowy embrace of the High Swiss mountains of the Valais. As the snow blankets the picturesque landscape of the car-free town of Zermatt, The Omnia transforms into a cosy haven, complete with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.

At the helm of this enchanting retreat is Christian, the General Manager, who ensures that every detail is flawlessly executed. His leadership radiates warmth and expertise, setting the tone for the exceptional service that guests have come to expect from this unique and luxury hotel.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Tanya at the check-in desk, whose friendly smile and efficient manner made the first impression feel like a warm welcome home. She embodied the spirit of hospitality that characterises THE OMNIA, ensuring every guest feels special from the moment they step through the door. While we enjoyed a welcome drink of Swiss sparkling on the terrace taking in the view of the majestic Matterhorn, our luggage was seamlessly delivered to our suite.

Staying at THE OMNIA

We were staying in a rather impressive Village Suite, with two rooms that included a living room with sofa and a bedroom with king size bed and chaise lounge. The suite also features a balcony with a view of Zermatt. The main bathroom has a bathtub, shower and WC accessed through a walk-through closet, while off the living room is another separate bathroom with shower and WC.

The suite was vast, with very modern clean lines and stripped-back interior design that felt more like Scandivia than Switzerland. There was more than enough space for Adam and me and our mountain of luggage, all of which slotted away out of sight with all the ample storage and closet space. The highlight of the room was the balcony with views over the town of Zermatt and the marvel that is the Matterhorn. The location of THE OMNIA is slightly on the hill over the village which means the views are amazing from all the rooms and hotel spaces, including the spa.

Our next stop was the wellness centre, with its mystical ambience offering pure relaxation. It comprises an indoor/outdoor pool, saunas, floral and herbal steam rooms and an outdoor whirlpool with a view of the village and the Matterhorn. The facilities also include a gymnasium with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment. We watched the sunset over the Matterhorn from the pool, which was rather magical as the red hues of the sky disappeared behind this iconic peak.

Food and Beverage at THE OMNIA

Dining at THE OMNIA is an experience in itself, and Leandro, the Restaurant Manager, alongside Executive Chef André Kneubühler and the kitchen curates a menu that celebrates the flavours of the region. Guests are treated to a culinary journey that highlights local ingredients, all served with a touch of elegance.

What I loved particularly about the menu was how it was broken down, with the bases of all dishes being vegetarian or vegan, and then you chose the protein to add as a “build your own” meal. This meant you could experience lots of different flavour combinations and mix and match things you like or want to try. A genius idea that I think more restaurants should embrace as it leads to less waste and more options for those who do not eat meat.

For those looking to indulge in fine wines at dinner, Ramona from Stuttgart was on hand to guide us through the impressive wine list, sharing her passion and expertise in every pour. I am a big fan of Swiss wines, and with only 2% exported out of the country, this was a golden opportunity to try some more unknown varieties and houses. And for those seeking a true taste of Switzerland, look no further than Cony, the beloved Schnapps lady. Her homemade schnapps trolley was a highlight of the winter experience, inviting guests to savour the spirit of the Alps in every sip.

As the day winds down, guests can unwind in the company of Jan, who brings humour and charm to both the breakfast and dinner service. His dry wit and playful banter created an atmosphere of joy, making every meal a delightful experience. We enjoyed having a cocktail before dinner by the fire and our chats about days on the slopes and travelling the globe.
