STK London is the London outpost of the eight-strong group of STK steakhouses. Located in the ME Hotel on the Strand, STK London features a long, glittering central bar surrounded by the dining area featuring numerous semi-circular banquettes, eye catching chandeliers and a suitably vibrant purple backdrop promising cocktails and an equally glamorous night out.
It is in a great geographical location, a short taxi drive away from theatres, shops and literally everything I love about the capital and of course, it would be rude not to visit the famous roof top bar for post dinner drinks.
We were greeted by the charming Vlad and Paul at the bar, knowledgeable and friendly, they poured the perfect Aperol Spritz and Margarita, after cocktails at the bar and we were shown to our table. We scanned the menu and as we took in the stylish interiors, I noticed surprisingly for a Thursday lunchtime there were only two other tables seated. Moving forward though, the service at our table was equally as good as that at the bar.
As we scanned the menu it was refreshing to see the choice of cuts, the said steaks come in various sizes, with; get this…. various toppings. I’m not quoting peppercorn sauce here either, far from it.
The feather light brioche was first out and arrived slathered in blue cheese and a herby sauce for dipping, this promised to be a great meal, with this as an intro alone.
The starter of tuna sashimi was great, fresh and presented well. However, the Lil’ BRGs were stunning, two gorgeous burgers were made up from wagyu beef, topped with “special sauce” all contained in a light sesame bun. These were teamed with soft shell crab sliders, which were also delicious (this course in itself would make a more than adequate lunch, should one not feel the full three courses were necessary). So, onto the main event itself, steak dominates the menu, naturally we felt it was only polite to order it, with a selection of different cuts of USDA prime beef offered in a range of sizes. This is another unique sell point in my opinion.
We chose medium size, medium rare fillets, and here’s a choice of six different toppings before the six sauce choices. Perfectly cooked, cut so easily and presented well (personally, I find a very good steak is not as easy to find as one would like).
There is also a selection of feasting boards for groups of more than two to share, and a small selection of non-steak main courses.
Even the sides, had the STK decadent touch, truffle fries anyone? Lobster mac and cheese maybe? We chose greens as our sides in a half-hearted attempt to be healthy, waste of time really as they tasted far too good to be.We scanned the desert menu, and glancing at our neighbours’ table, this was clearly another speciality of STK London.
Sadly (and I’m blaming London traffic and myself in this scenario) we didn’t have time for desserts . . . and believe me, I do love a rather special dessert.
Are we planning to maybe sample these in the near future? Yes please.
So to conclude, the menu is great (I’d suggest going prepared for a post lunch nap as it’s food coma heaven), maybe lunch time isn’t the time to visit for the if you are looking for a buzzy atmosphere, as we didn’t expect the restaurant to be as quiet as it was that day. However for us it was the perfect time for a catch up and a long lunch, with great service.
