There’s something about London’s Borough Market at Christmas which is quite magical! Whether it’s the cosy atmosphere, twinkling lights that illuminate the Thames or the jovial atmosphere of the suburb which attracts locals and tourists to some of the most unique and moreish foodie hotspots. The newest watering hole to welcome me through its doors was the Quill Wine Bar.
Housed in one of the iconic railway arches, guests enter through the heated outside terrace which provides perfect seating for people watching, and inside the atmosphere is equally as riveting for the small but perfectly proportioned 75 covers.
Situated on two levels, the ground level houses the bar and high tables, but I headed up the spiral staircase to the first floor, which opened out to a cosy space that would lend itself well to date nights or small gatherings so long as you don’t mind squeezing by for the loo as the tables are tightly packed!
Like its older sister, Finch in Brixton, it is stylishly quirky, with the interiors developed in collaboration with Sophie Bicknell of Studio Bare. I particularly liked the celebrity-adorned cushions that lined the banquette sofa and the intriguing ornaments that dotted the shelves.
Food & Drink at Quill Wine Bar
Owned by Andrew Gray, who is famed for championing English wines, you can discover a curated collection of small and independent winemakers, with the sentiment of introducing guests to new varieties and stepping outside of their comfort zone. However, there are of course bestsellers too, plus classic cocktails such as margaritas, old fashioned and negronis.
The food menu is immersive and fun – inspired by the storytelling of nearby Shakespeare’s Globe. The kitchen is fronted by Rob Wade (formerly of the Michelin Starred Chez Bruce). It includes the hottest trend of 2025 – gourmet hot dogs – which for the meat eaters are boar, plus a delicious vegan version in a brioche bun (with jam & pickle). There are also scotch eggs, buttermilk chicken and a hearty cheese board to help the wine go down.
Quill will also continue Fables & Company’s tradition of hosting interactive events, including ‘Secret Notes’, where patrons pass anonymous notes between tables, complimentary tarot readings and traditional card and dice games.
Quill is open now, seven days a week. You can find out more, and make a booking here.
