A Winter Retreat at Hotel Maiensee: A Memorable Getaway

by Lady Charlotte Lynham

Located in the picturesque landscape of St Christoph am Arlberg, Hotel Maiensee offers a perfect blend of relaxed luxury and access to some of the best slopes in Austria. From the moment I arrived, the enchanting landscape blanketed in snow set the perfect backdrop for the perfect winter getaway. My stay in the Suite Arlberg Panorama was nothing short of magical, with breathtaking views that made every moment feel like a postcard.

The Suite: A Sanctuary of Comfort

Upon entering the Suite Arlberg Panorama, I was immediately captivated by the warm, inviting ambience. The spacious room was adorned with elegant alpine decor, featuring wooden beams and plush furnishings that exuded a sense of cosiness. The highlight, of course, was the panoramic view of the snow-draped mountains that stretched beyond the windows, creating a stunning backdrop that shifted with the light throughout the day.

The suite’s amenities were impeccable. A sumptuous king-sized bed promised restful nights, while a luxurious bathroom with a soaking tub offered a perfect retreat after a day spent exploring the slopes. I appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the complimentary coffee machine and a selection of teas, which made mornings all the more delightful as I sipped my brew while watching the sun rise over the mountains from my luxurious day bed.

Culinary Delights: Half-Board Dinner

One of the joys of staying at Maiensee was indulging in the half-board dinner, where I had the pleasure of being served by Adrian, a delightful Polish waiter. His warm demeanour and attentive service made dining an even more enjoyable experience. Each evening, the restaurant transformed into a culinary haven that showcased the finest Austrian cuisine, complemented by international influences.

The dinner menu featured a delectable array of dishes, from hearty traditional fare to lighter, more contemporary options. On my first night, I savoured a rich venison stew, perfectly paired with seasonal vegetables and a local white wine recommended by Costas, the Greek wine waiter. His expertise in wine pairing transformed the meal into a true gastronomic journey, as he shared stories of the vineyards and the unique characteristics of each bottle.

As the days passed, I was continually impressed by the creativity and quality of the meals. The chefs at Maiensee took pride in using locally sourced ingredients, and each dish told a story of the region’s culinary heritage. From homemade pasta to exquisite desserts, every bite was a celebration of flavour that left a lasting impression.

Lunch at the Burger Bar

On one particularly chilly afternoon, I decided to venture to the hotel’s Burger Bar for a casual lunch. I was greeted by Paige, a cheerful waitress from New Zealand, who brought a refreshing energy to the atmosphere. With her friendly banter and knowledge of the menu, she made selecting my meal a delightful experience.

The Burger Bar offered a range of gourmet burgers that catered to diverse tastes, and I opted for the signature beef burger topped with melted cheese and a tangy house sauce. The burger was juicy and flavorful, served alongside crispy fries that were the perfect accompaniment. As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn’t help but admire the cosy, laid-back ambience of the bar, which was a great contrast to the more traditional dining experience of the evening meals.

Spa Indulgence: A Journey to Relaxation

No winter retreat would be complete without a visit to the spa, and the wellness facilities at Maiensee were very welcome after a day on the slopes. I treated myself to an Abhyanga Ayurvedic Full Body Massage, guided by Lucie, a lovely woman from Argentina. Her warm personality instantly put me at ease, and her expertise in massage left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.

Lucie began the session by discussing my specific needs and areas of tension, ensuring that the treatment was tailored to my body. The massage itself was a delightful blend of gentle strokes and invigorating pressure, designed to stimulate circulation and relieve muscle tension. As the soothing oils enveloped my skin, I could feel the stresses of everyday life melting away. The serene ambience of the spa, complete with calming music and the faint scent of essential oils, enhanced the overall experience.

Embracing the Winter Wonderland

Beyond the comforts of the hotel, the surrounding winter wonderland beckoned. Each day, I ventured out to explore the pristine slopes that the region is renowned for. The fresh powder glistened in the sunlight, and the crisp mountain air invigorated my spirit.

After a day of outdoor adventure, returning to the warmth of Maiensee felt like coming home. The hotel’s cosy lounge areas provided the perfect setting to unwind, with crackling fireplaces and plush seating inviting guests to gather and share stories of the day’s exploits.

Run for decades by the same family, you can see hospitality is of the utmost importance to Hotel Maiensee. The warmth of the staff, particularly Adrian, Costas, and Paige, added a personal touch that made me feel truly welcome. Their attentiveness and genuine care elevated my experience, ensuring that my stay was not just a vacation, but a cherished memory.
