Healthy snacks to keep your family sane during Self-Isolation

by Yemi Edwards

A majority of the nation is now on week four of staying safe at home. Being able to pop out for little treats is pretty much now not a possibility. So what can a family have in the meantime to calm sudden hunger pains? Below are a few of what I like to call “Self Isolation Healthy Snacks” that are available to purchase online.

Take control of the mornings by giving the new homeschoolers a nutritious oat breakfast. Rude Health has a cereal range for children including Fruity Bircher which is organic with no artificial ingredients; just oats, apples, raisins and bananas. Easy to prepare by adding warm milk, the kids get a wholesome start to their day! Rude Health’s Fruity Bircher cereal is available online via Ocado, and the Rude Health website.

But let’s not forget about you! Billy’s Diet gives you a High protein, Gluten-Free Banana Milkshake, and a High Protein, Gluten-Free Oat Porridge. Both are very low in calories and carbs but high in protein to keep you fuller for longer. These will help the adults in the house stay fuelled to tame the little beasts. You can also find High Protein Soya Chips. High in protein, high fibre and low sugar you can feel free to be a tad cheeky with these healthy bags of treats.

When that time between breakfast and lunch occurs, there is no need to worry. Gregory’s Tree Organic Strawberry Fruit Twists are just the surprise to whip out! It follows the success of Gregory’s Tree Blueberry & Raspberry Fruit Twists. They are gluten-free, vegan, 60 calories per bar and free from added sugar. Each double fruit-twist bar made from organic fruit is gently heated and pulped to give it that extra tasty twist. These are one of my favourites, and I was delighted to find that they are available online! You can purchase from their Amazon Shop.

Podberry Crunchy Pea Snacks are made with real peas which have been freeze-dried and not fried. They are low in calories and great for vegan and gluten-free diets. They have the combination of the smell of peas, the taste of the natural flavourings and they have quite a crunch. These snacks are a great alternative to crisps, being an excellent source of plant protein. The favourite flavours in our house were the Sea Salt and Balsamic Vinegar and the Sweet Chilli. They also come in Parmesan & Truffle and Ham Hock flavours.

Conscious Organic Raw Chocolate is a great choice for both adults and kids alike. The kids loved the smooth, creamy chocolate texture and taste whilst the adults enjoy the scientific and nutritional facts. These include that the chocolate is 100% organic, handmade in England and helps fight depression plus the bars are vegan, free from gluten and refined sugars!

What better way to find calm amid the current chaos and treat yourself while social distancing?

Also, each bar contains superfoods and therapeutic oils! The flavour combinations are original. We started with the Peppermint and the Dark Side! The ones that caught my attention were Love potion N°9, Sour Cherry and Four Nuts. I love cherries, the combinations of the coconut blossom sugar and mixed with high-quality cacao melts away the stress of keeping the household entertained during this lockdown. The Love Potion N°9 is made with Rose and Maca. For those who don’t know about Maca, a few benefits include boosting energy levels and maintaining a healthy sexual function and libido. I’ll stop there. Conscious Organic Raw Chocolate like the others is available online and at their Amazon Shop.

This next self-isolation healthy snack involves killing two birds with one stone! Your kids are bored; homeschool is taking its toll. That is ok. A solution to “something to do” and “something to eat” comes from one box! Little Cooks Co is a monthly subscription-based recipe kit that’s posted through the letterbox, direct to kids, in a 100% recyclable box with compostable packaging. The box contains all the natural and healthy dry ingredients of that month’s delicious and nutritious recipe for kids to bake in the home.

It comes with a recipe card so don’t worry if you are not a home chef. The instructions are straightforward to follow. The organic ingredients are free from all refined sugar and selected by a registered child nutritionist. The box also contains games for the kids to do while you wait for the recipe to cook. The activity will distract and also produce a reward that everyone can enjoy. Plus Every box bought pays for a vulnerable school child in the UK to receive a healthy breakfast through its partnership with the charity Magic Breakfast.” For more info see online.
