For a unique and intimate Christmas market experience, venture to the Lendkanal, Klagenfurt’s picturesque canal system. “Hafenknistern” is arguably one of the most beautiful and wholesome Christmas markets you’ll ever encounter! Upon arrival, a small, welcoming cluster of vendors gathered around a crackling fire pit offers a glimpse of the magic to come. The warmth of the flames and the inviting aromas create an instant sense of cosiness.
A short stroll down the canal path reveals the true heart of Hafenknistern: a 4km stretch of waterway transformed into a magic wonderland. Music drifts through the crisp air, mingling with the sound of laughter and cheerful conversation. The canal banks, adorned with twinkling lights and decorations, become a lovely promenade. The length of the waterway makes for a perfect evening stroll, with plenty to see and experience on both sides.
Whether you’re craving something sweet or savoury, Hafenknistern has you covered. Children will be delighted by the abundance of sweet treats on offer, from gingerbread hearts to candied nuts. Meanwhile, adults can warm themselves with a steaming mug of Glühwein, the traditional mulled wine that’s a must-try during the advent season, or sample local beers and other warming beverages.

You can also leave the city of Klagenfurt and venture into the breathtaking Katschberg mountain pass. Here, the Katschberg Advent Trail – known as Adventweg – beckons you on a magical journey through a snow-covered wonderland. Whether you choose to hike from the resort or take a scenic ride on a horse-drawn carriage, the stunning mountain scenery will leave you awestruck.
The 2.5km trail winds through a pristine winter landscape, adorned with twinkling lights and charming wooden cabins serving as pit stops. Each cabin offers a unique surprise, from live music performances and storytelling sessions to traditional crafts demonstrations and tastings of local delicacies. Don’t forget to purchase a ticket that includes a thermos flask! This allows you to refill it with warm fruit tea throughout the trail, keeping you warm and energised for the entire adventure.
Adventweg runs from December 7th to December 22nd, daily from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the starting point. Prices start at €12 for adults and €8 for children.

For an unparalleled perspective on Klagenfurt’s festive magic, head to Pyramidenkogel, the world’s tallest wooden observation tower. A small, yet charming Christmas market awaits at its base, adorned with twinkling lights and offering seasonal goodies.
The Pyramidenkogel Christmas Market runs from November 23rd to December 23rd, daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry is free, though separate tickets are required for access to the observation tower.
