A Culinary Masterclass: Gouqi

by Lily Niu

London’s vibrant culinary scene boasts many exceptional restaurants, each vying for the discerning palate’s attention. Yet, a recent discovery has left me utterly enthralled amidst this tapestry of flavours – Gouqi. Nestled just off the bustling Trafalgar Square, Gouqi promises a transformative experience, transcending the realm of mere dining and elevating it to an art form.

Stepping into a colourful canvas

From the outset, Gouqi exudes a captivating charm. Stepping through the entrance, you’re greeted by the Berri Bar, a vibrant space pulsating with energy. Here, innovative Asian-inspired cocktails entice the senses, each a meticulously crafted symphony of flavour. The Rose Dragon, a fragrant blend of whiskey, amaro, peach wine, and dragon fruit, promises an intoxicating dance on the palate.

Beyond the Berri Bar lies the main dining room, a symphony of colour and light. Each of the four distinct dining areas boasts a unique colour scheme, creating a dynamic and convivial atmosphere. Those seeking a more intimate setting will find solace in the three semi-private booths, adorned with plush red velvet and separated by discreet curtains.

During my visit, I revelled in the secluded luxury of this space, its plush comfort and soft lighting fostering a sense of privacy perfect for a romantic tete-a-tete or an evening catching up with a close friend.

Culinary artistry

Gouqi’s culinary mastermind is Chef Tong Chee Hwee, a name synonymous with excellence. Renowned for his transformative role in London’s perception of Chinese cuisine, Chef Tong boasts an impressive resume, including a staggering seven Michelin stars earned during his tenure as Group Executive Head Chef at Hakkasan Group.

This wealth of experience translates beautifully onto Gouqi’s menu. Chef Tong presents a delightful interplay between tradition and modernity, showcasing premium Cantonese cuisine with a contemporary twist. Seasonal ingredients sourced from around the globe find their way onto the plate, each meticulously prepared to highlight their natural brilliance.

A must-order is the Steamed Royal Dim Sum Platter, a breathtaking display of eight delectable morsels. From the classic Shanghai Xiao Long Bao, bursting with flavourful broth, to the Prawn Siu Mai, adorned with a luxurious crown of abalone, each bite is a revelation.

My personal highlight was the Angus Tenderloin Beef with Black Pepper Sauce. The melt-in-your-mouth tenderness of the beef, perfectly complemented by the piquancy of the black pepper sauce, created an unforgettable symphony of textures and tastes.

However, the true pièce de résistance was the best egg-fried rice I’ve ever had, a statement I don’t make lightly. Each grain was distinct and fluffy, infused with a subtle yet undeniable depth of flavour that left me yearning for more.

Desserts that delight

Gouqi’s culinary journey doesn’t end with the savoury delights. The dessert menu is an exploration of intricacy and refreshment, showcasing Chef Tong’s global influences. Here, traditional French and British techniques weave a captivating dance with Chinese and Southeast Asian flavours.

For a touch of tropical luxury, indulge in the Midnight Sun – a decadent creation featuring mango, black sesame, and passion fruit. Alternatively, the Gouqi Valley offers a sophisticated symphony of dark chocolate, matcha, and goji berries, a perfect ending to a truly remarkable experience.

More than just a meal

Gouqi offers more than just exceptional food; it’s a journey for the senses. From the vibrant ambience to the meticulously crafted dishes, every detail is thoughtfully curated to create a truly bespoke dining experience.

Whether you seek a lively social gathering in the open dining area, a touch of intimacy in the semi-private booths, or the exclusivity of the private dining rooms, Gouqi caters to your every desire.
