TOWN – SCHLICK 2000
The Nearest town to the skiing of Schlick 2000 is Fulpmes which is located in the Stubai valley or Stubaital as the locals call it in the Tyrol. It is one of many smaller ski resorts in the region like the Stubai glacier and being only 17 kms south of Innsbruck it is part of the wonderful Ski + City Pass whereby one pass gives you access to 13 different ski resorts, 22 sights and access to local transport in and around Innsbruck; there is even a tram from Innsbruck to Fulpmes with a bus that completes the journey to Schlick 2000.
The town made its mark centuries ago through mining and working Gold, Silver and iron and the trade mark on tools to this day “Stubai Werkzeug” can still be seen on tools to this day. The town is a traditional Austrian village rather than a banging apres ski town, but we quite liked this.
SKIING IN SCHLICK 2000
The Skiing at Schlick 2000 can be accessed by train and bus and there is also a large free car park. Once ready to ski the Kreuzjoch Cable Car takes you up to the main skiing area. With ski pistes mostly nestling in a north facing bowl, and the good amount of natural snow backed up by good snow making abilities the pistes stay in pretty good shape. The 9 modern and efficient lifts serve a great and varied collection of blue, red and black pistes which will keep all levels of skiers happy.
The majority of the terrain is above 1600 metres which makes for good snow conditions. The highest skiing point is at the Sennjoch at 2240 metres. The views are fantastic and the mountains that loom over the area are quite different from most of the mountains in the Alps, such peaks as the Schlicker Seespitze, the Riepenwand and the Ochsenwand feel more like the peaks of the Rockies. Snowboarders look out for the long flat midsection on the way down the mountain, you will require a bit of speed or perhaps the hand of a helpful skier. The skiing may not satisfy for a whole weeks skiing, but the beauty is that you can visit the other local ski resorts.
The ski area is big with families with young children. ‘Big Ron’ is the local mascot of the kinderland, instructors and carers look after the little ones here. Even tiny ones over 3 months old can be catered for in the play rooms, so the grown ups can go ski the mountain. Children under 8 can travel for free on the mountain as long as they are with an accompanying adult. The mountain has 9 restaurants and bars, we liked the Zirmachalm restaurant on blue piste 1 with its cosy atmosphere, log fires and traditional Austrian cuisine.
BEGINNERS
What is great about Schlick 2000 is that the blue pistes span the whole length of the mountain, even from the highest point at the Sennjoch down blue pistes 4c, 4d and onto 1b and 1. The blue 6 piste to the valley is a blue, but this is a long thin track which some beginners will struggle on, especially a the end of the day, so perhaps take the gondola down. For the Children check out the Froneben middle station area.
INTERMEDIATE
The mountain is dotted with red pistes that span across the mountain and give a variety of skiing experiences notably the red 2, 3 and 4 pistes, from carving to steeps you will find the resort entertaining.
EXPERT
There is a collection of black pistes that will satisfy those looking for something a little trickier, whilst not that long they are a great addition to the red pistes across the mountain. Check out the 3a, 3b and 4a which are in the same part of the mountain or head over to number 8 piste.
